Lecce Stone
We started working with Lecce stone because we fell in love with the Baroque architecture typical of the Salento peninsula, palaces and churches embellished with this remarkable stone.
Lecce stone originates from water. Before reaching us, it was in the form of sea mud, dried up and compressed by the forces of nature over the millennia; it is common, in fact, for it to contain fossils of aquatic species.
Beauty and ductility are its main characteristics: master craftsmen have been known to state that Lecce stone is one that actually wants to be worked. It is no coincidence that this stone represents the very foundation from which the Baroque artistic and architectural movement called “Barocco Leccese” evolved.
Without Lecce stone, in fact, we would have neither such extraordinary masterpieces as the Santa Croce Basilica or the Lecce Cathedral, nor the majestic Santa Maria Assunta Cathedral.
The aesthetic appeal of this stone derives above all from its extremely fine texture and warm tones, from which details and definitions are obtained making it ideal for creating ornaments and friezes.
Even today, the crafting of Lecce stone is the most traditionally hand-made one could imagine: creativity, experience, chisel and rasp are the only tools that the expert craftsman uses for his creations.
That’s why we fell in love with Lecce stone, a veritable passion that, through our works, we wish to convey to you as well.
