The tradition of Vicenza stone sundials

An ancient object, already known to the Egyptians, rediscovered as an ornamental piece. Stone sundials retain a unique charm, reflecting the slow passage of time marked by the sun and its shadows.

We all know, if only from a school memory, what a sundial is. An ancient instrument used to measure time by following the position of the sun. Recently, we have seen a rediscovery of this instrument for ornamental purposes, particularly in garden and outdoor decor.

The stone sundial (in its horizontal version) consists of a disk and a rod (called a gnomon) fixed in the center of the disk. Hour lines are drawn from the base of the gnomon to the edge of the disk, while the gnomon is tilted at the same degree as the latitude of the location where the sundial will be installed.

In our workshop, Vicenza stone sundials can be custom-made. The flexibility of the stone allows for decorations and engravings on the base, while the dial is crafted from bronze, copper, or iron.
